A background actor is someone who performs in a show in a non-speaking role, usually in the background. Central Casting is your go-to resource for background casting opportunities. Every day, our casting directors cast hundreds of background actors to work on the biggest movies and TV shows filmed in the US.

A stand-in takes the place of a principal actor for rehearsals, camera blocking and lighting setups. Unlike background actors, stand-ins do not appear on screen.

Doubles take the place of principal actors on screen, though their faces are rarely (if ever) seen. There are a variety of doubles used on set, including hand, photo and minor doubles.

Central Casting casts a wide range of productions, including feature films, TV shows, music videos, commercials and other projects.

While Central Casting mainly cast background actors, we are occasionally asked to provide featured roles for productions.

It is not advisable to rely on being a background actor for your sole income. Most background actors have another source of income.

There is some weekend work for background actors and you can let our casting directors know that you’re only available on weekends via the Calendar on your profile. However, this will limit the number of job offers you can accept as filming generally occurs on weekdays.
