What is a Background Actor?
A Background Actor or (also referred to as extra, background talent, and atmosphere) is someone who performs in a show in a nonspeaking role, usually in the background. Are you interested in background acting in New York? Central Casting registers Background Actors to appear in movies, TV shows, and other productions.

I have already registered with Central Casting in person. Do I need to complete the online registration process?
No. If you have previously registered in person at a Central Casting office, you do not need to complete the online registration process.

Why do I still need to come to Central Casting after completing the online registration process?
You to come in person to complete your registration by taking your profile photo and completing employee onboarding paperwork.

Do your best to answer all the questions as you will not be able to proceed without making a selection. Changes can be made when you visit the office for New Registration Onboarding.

I’m about to move, what address should I use?
Please use your current address. If necessary, addresses can be changed at any time by coming to a Re-Registration and Updates session.

Do I have to answer all questions?
The online registration process requires submission of all relevant information. Each page has information that is required.

I’m on a page and can’t continue. Why not?
Each page requires some information before you can proceed to the next question. Check your answers to ensure each required field has a response.

I don’t have my own email address. What should I do?
A unique email address is required for each individual to register and build an online talent profile with Central Casting.

I share my email address with someone else. Can we both use it to register?
No. A unique email address is required for each person who registers and builds an online talent profile.

Can I register for someone else?
No. You can only register for yourself. At this time, minors cannot register online and must be registered in person.

Why can’t I register my child online?
Minors have different requirements when registering and must be registered in person. Please visit our Kids Registration page for more information.

Can I email you my information instead of completing the online registration process?
No. We only accept registration information through our secure online registration process or in person.

Can I email you photos instead of coming into the office?
No. Each new registrant will have a photo taken by Central Casting for their talent profile.

I’m not a resident of the United States. Can I still register with Central Casting?
In accordance with federal law, Central Casting is only able to hire those who are authorized to work in the United States.

If I register, am I really going to be able to get on set of movies and TV shows?
Work is not guaranteed. Registering with Central Casting makes you eligible to be booked for work should you fit the needs of our production clients.

How many profiles can I set up?
You can only set up a single talent profile to use at Central Casting.

Can I register my pets or vehicles to be in movies and TV shows?
We register you, the individual. You may add vehicles, pets, and other props you have to your profile.

Once I’m registered, how do I find work?
Please visit our Talent page for all the information you need on how to get work.

Will you assign me to a Casting Director or an agent?
No, you are responsible for securing your own work. You will likely interact with several of our Casting Directors while you submit for work opportunities.

When do reservations become available?
New sessions open up exactly 14 days from the time the event starts. If all dates show “unavailable,” then sessions are either currently filled or not yet open. Check back often, spots may become available due to cancellations.

I need to cancel or change my reservation. How do I do that?
Please review the email that was sent you from no-reply@calendly.com to cancel or change your reservation.

I did not receive a confirmation email for my reservation. What happened?
If you successfully made a reservation, but did not receive a confirmation email, please check your junk and other non-inbox folders. You can also search your email for no-reply@calendly.com to locate your reservation confirmation.

What should I wear when I come into the office for registration?
No specific look is required for your casting photo. Please come to our office dressed in the attire that you think best represents you, ready to take your photo.

When will I be famous?
Don’t worry. When you’re famous, you’ll know.

What happens if I don’t have proper documentation?
Those without required documentation (unexpired originals only, no photocopies) to accompany the I-9 form will be turned away.
You must also bring identification showing date of birth for the Age Verification form.

What if I’m a member of SAG-AFTRA?
Please bring your current SAG-AFTRA card/receipt issued by SAG-AFTRA with you to registration.

Can I bring my child?
Guests, minors, and pets cannot be accommodated. Everyone who visits Central Casting New York must have a reservation. Visit our Kids Registration page for more information on minor registration.

I just dyed my hair, how can I update my look?
You can update your look and take a new profile photo at a Re-Registration and Updates sessions. Check the Re-Registration and Updates FAQs on the Talent page for more information and to make a reservation.

As a registered Background Actor with Central Casting, I’ve been told I need to re-register or update my talent profile. How do I do that?
Re-Registration and Updates are completed in person by reservation only at our New York office. Please review our article, When Should I Re-Register and Update? for more information.

Can I still register if I’m late?
Building security will not admit you if you arrive more than 10 minutes late to your scheduled reservation. Please arrive no more than 10 minutes early to your session.

How long is registration?
Registration is approximately one hour.

Do I need to live in the New York area to register?
No, but you need to be able to work in the New York area.

I’m registered at another Central Casting location but would like to work in New York. Do I need to register again?
If you have previously registered in person at another Central Casting office, but would now like to work in New York, you will need to make a reservation to attend a Re-Registration and Updates session.
If you have registered online, but have not attended a New Registration Onboarding session and had your photo taken at one of our offices, you must log in to the online registration process and make a reservation for a New Registration Onboarding session. Re-Registration and Updates are only for those who have previously registered in person at Central Casting.
Central Casting is a participant in the E-Verify program. We will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with information from each new employee’s I-9 form to confirm employment authorization. Note: If the government cannot confirm that you are authorized to work, we are required to provide you with written instructions and an opportunity to contact the SSA and/or DHS before taking adverse action against you, including terminating your employment.
